2009 Charity update
unw Charity Group continues to flourish and met on 4 occasions during 2009.
We welcomed guest speakers including Alan Holmes (formerly of Wood Holmes) whose presentation “Future Proofing your Business” challenged our attendees to make future-focused thinking part of everyday business life with practical tips on how to improve understanding of the future challenges that might be faced and how to make the most of any opportunities that may arise.
VAT, always a topical issue, was the subject of a presentation by unw’s VAT partner, Mark Hetherington, and an update on this subject is planned for 2010.
HR is potentially a contentious issue. Steve Duncan (of Duncan HR) gave a thought provoking talk on how to look after your best assets – your people – in these uncertain times. Judging by the questions and networking afterwards, he had certainly grabbed his audience’s attention and, again, another update is planned for 2010.
Finally, we were delighted to welcome Frank Nicholson who gamely took part in a lively discussion with Charles Linaker and Joanna Gray (acting as unw’s Richard and Judy) on the subject of Trustees’ Responsibilities. This covered a wide range of topics ranging from compliance and understanding accounts through to duties, training and time commitment.
After this last session, we distributed a questionnaire and, following an excellent response, we now have a very good idea of what you would like to see on the agenda for 2010. We will keep you all updated and, in the meantime, thank all of you who have supported the group throughout 2009.
