Firm gets teeth into more work
Newcastle-based unw currently advises more than 120 dentists in the North East on their tax and accounting issues, as well as on strategic and succession planning, acquisitions and sales.
And now partner Alan Suggett, who is among the top 10 dental business advisers in the UK, has spoken at a British Dental Association event in London, as well Cheshire and Yorkshire, in a bid to share his knowledge outside the North East.
Alan, whose son Nigel is also a practicing dentist at Ridgway Dental in Chester-le-Street, County Durham, said: “Dentists run fairly unique businesses in that they must combine entrepreneurial profit motives with the restrictions of working within the healthcare environment.
“I have been asked to speak at a number of British Dental Association events, where I spoke about how dentists can grow their businesses by defining a strategy, setting budgets and targets, and really getting hold of their financial management, which can be where they fall down.
“I guess it’s a fairly niche area, but after almost 30 years of acting for dentists I have worked with everything from tiny “squats” to multi-million pound practices, for dental students contemplating their future, to retiring practitioners contemplating the sale of the biggest asset they’ll ever own”.
Suggett, who sits on the technical committee of the National Association of Specialist Dental Accountants and produces its quarterly survey of dental practice goodwill valuations, is also helping dentists buy and sell their practices around the country.
Most recently, he advised Greg Cadman when he bought Collingham Dental Care near Wetherby, Yorkshire. Greg Cadman said: “As I was buying a dental practice for the first time I really needed good help and advice.
“I found Alan to be extremely knowledgeable in all aspects related to the purchase, and he was able to guide me through the process very easily.
“He was particularly helpful in drawing up a business plan and calculating a suitable price to offer the vendor.
“He was always contactable if advice was needed and he also introduced me to very experienced people in areas such as banking, insurance cover and legal matters”.
Alan will be speaking at British Dental Association event in Leeds on 23 April.
