New arrivals hit the mark

2009 has seen the arrival of several new members to the team with specific individuals arriving to add to our sphere of expertise across all sectors of the firm.

On the partner front, we were delighted to welcome Mark Hetherington in February, as a specialist VAT Tax partner. Mark, with more than 20 years of VAT experience with HMRC and a “Big 4” firm, has a significant reputation with businesses in the North East and acknowledges that relationships are key: “unw’s emphasis on putting their clients first ties in extremely well with my own philosophy of creating, building and maintaining relationships with clients.”

Specialist VAT advice represents an opportunity to improve profitability and enhance cash flow and by way of example, two of Mark’s clients have recently secured substantial VAT refunds of £750k and £1.35m respectively.

Alan Suggett, a well known figure in the north east business community, joined us as partner in April 2009 to head up our Business Services department. The department, including an already well established Accounting Services team, now includes unw’s Dental Business Unit. Alan is a nationally recognised dental accountancy specialist and is a member of the NASDA technical committee. He has also rolled out unw’s Growth Programme which helps business owners develop strategy, improve profits, and manage risk. Alan comments: “Over the years, I have come to the conclusion that the flexibility and value for money of an independent firm coupled with real expertise, such as we have at unw, is more appropriate for family owned and SME businesses."

Finally in October, Michael Morris joined from Deloittte, where he lead their Entrepreneurial Business practice for the last 4 years.   Michael, partner in our Audit & Assurance department, is recognised as a leading expert in the provision of advice to privately owned limited companies.

Michael says: “The firm’s focus on mid-tier organisations based in the North East and emphasis upon providing expert advice within a competitive pricing structure combine to produce a formula that I know will work. unw is now recognised within the market place as a leader in this regard and I am looking forward to the challenge of maintaining the momentum.”

We also welcomed Lyndsey Short and Ryan Lamb (Audit & Assurance), David Jones and Kelly Issit (Business Services), Chris Wood and Steve Kilcoyne (Tax) and Lee Humble and David Blair (Corporate Finance).
